Ways to Help
What Kind of Priest do you want?
None of us questions the beauty of the priesthood. However, considering the contemporary challenges facing the priesthood, as well as Saint John Paul II’s exhortation that a renewed priesthood is essential for the “future evangelization of humanity,” the question facing the laity is not, “Do you want the priesthood?” but rather, “What kind of priest do you want?”
What kind of priest do you want hearing your confession?
What kind of priest do you want anointing your aging parents?
What kind of priest do you want forming the souls of your grandchildren?
What kind of priest do you want preaching the Gospel in the culture of our time?
Every priest is ordained with a passion for Christ, a deep love for the Church, and a zeal for the priesthood. However, attention to the spiritual life can easily be lost in the midst of the many demands on a priest’s time. This results in a weakened priesthood, leaving the laity hungry for spiritual leadership.
The mission of the Institute for Priestly Formation is to help priests and seminarians develop a deep spiritual life that is alive not only in prayer but in the midst of daily life. With that deeply alive spiritual life, they are better equipped to serve you, their parishioners, and to help you develop a deep spiritual life as well.
We take our inspiration from the words of Father Pedro Arrupe, SJ, who once served as General of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) who said:
“Nothing is more practical than finding God,
than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way.
What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything.
It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning,
what you do with your evenings,
how you spend your weekends,
what you read, who you know,
what breaks your heart,
and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in Love,
stay in love,
and it will decide everything.”
To say it simply, everything we do at IPF is geared to help priests and seminarians fall more deeply in love, stay in love so that their love for God decides everything.
